Kathleen Merrigan, one of Food Democracy Now’s “Sustainable Dozen,” has been chosen by the Obama administration to be the next Deputy Secretary of Agriculture. This is excellent news for fans of local, organic, and sustainable agriculture: Merrigan’s record indicates that she is an unwavering ally, and her in-depth work on labeling standards has already proven to be immensely beneficial. And the USDA has developed a reputation, especially in recent years, for being too beholden to entrenched interests. Having a Deputy Secretary who is committed to substantial agricultural reform could have profound implications.
In the flurry of names and appointments in the new administration, this will be one to remember.
