We just got word today that James, one of the servers at Alana’s, a very nice guy in his early 20s, went into abrupt cardiac arrest some time ago — less than two weeks, I believe, but I’m not sure. He survived, but I don’t know anything about his condition at present. The cause was a heart defect, I gather a congenital one having to do with the nerves that control the heart muscles.
James has — you guessed it — no medical insurance, and he has been in the hospital since his cardiac arrest. Alana’s will be having a benefit dinner on July 13 to help defray his expenses. The cost will be $50. I’m about 90% sure that this information is correct; I hope to have it confirmed within 24-48 hours. Unfortunately, Alana’s is closed this week, so I’m not sure how quickly I can get specifics. For now, if it’s at all possible for you to make it to the dinner, save the date.
All of this is second-hand, based on an email message that I was only able to glance at today, so I’m awaiting more details. I will post any updates or corrections that I receive, but if you have more details please post them below. Thanks.
Update. From an email from The Twisted Vine:
On Sunday, July 13, there is a Mexican buffet at Alana’s from 4-8pm. Admission is $50 and those interested in margaritas, etc can purchase those separately. Proceeds will go to an account for James Westfall, one of the servers at the restaurant. A week ago, James went into sudden cardiac arrest at his home and has been in ICU at Riverside ever since. He was diagnosed with long q-t wave syndrome, a congenital problem with the electrical system of the heart. James is only 26 and has no health insurance. So I am letting everyone know who might be up for some great food and great company. Please spread the word and bring along any others who feel the same!

PS: Please pass it on!
Update II. From Alana’s, on James’ condition, 7/6/08:
he was released yesterday after almost two weeks…
he has what is called “long q – t syndrome” which is a heart defect that has to do with a misfiring of impulses that tell the heart muscle when to contract.
he now has an implant – not like dick cheney’s which predates stainless steel.
and yes, we’ll be paying part of his bill “of health” – just made that up.
